Challenge Yourself to Try New Things

When I am on holiday I find it quite easy to explore the place I am visiting. I get out and about and walk for ages, stopping to investigate anything that looks the slightest bit different or interesting.

Walking along the beach I stand and stare at the patterns in the wet sand left by the retreating waves or take photo after photo of the seagulls in flight or the different colours of the setting sun, trying for the picture that best captures the mood of the day. When in a new town I’m likely to wander up and down the side streets seeing if I can find the cute little café, gift shop or gallery I have seen advertised in a brochure at the information centre.

But on a day-to-day basis it is just so much easier to go to town by the same route, shop at my usual supermarket or drive straight down the main road, not even wondering what is down the side streets and never noticing the sign for the local café, picture theatre, gallery, nursery or orchard all within easy reach of where I live.

We humans are creatures of habit. We tend to get up at the same time each day, have the same thing for breakfast, shower and get dressed without taking much notice of the automatic choices we are making.

How different it is when we actually stop and think about what we are doing and take our time to look at what is right there under our noses. For a few moments we allow our attention to be captured by a new sight or sound or we feel renewed by participating in a new activity.

What new experiences make life seem fresh and help you to feel more alive and energised?

Thankyou for your clear vision of what coaching is about. I really like the idea of embracing your own greatness and bringing out the greatness in others. I believe that as we learn more about ourselves, the values that drive us and the unique strengths we bring to this world, then we can indeed walk our true path in life and truly be who we are meant to be. Taking the time to discuss these issues with a coach can be powerful part of this process.

Coaching is an exciting new profession that first helps you to get clear on your own life values and personal mission, and then gives you the tools to be in the world as a powerful, clear and compelling communicator. It was created and designed to assist individuals just like you to embrace your own greatness and learn to bring out the greatness in others.

Often those special times we enjoy as children stay with us for life. Iloved going to see the Christmas lights and made it a part of my children's childhood too. Now they are grown, I sometimes 'borrow' a friend's child so that I can see the Christmas displays in the department store windows. I'm sure I enjoy it as much as they do. Trying new things doesn't have to involve a big outlay - there are plenty of experiences to enjoy that have no monetary cost - they just take a little time and a dollop of imagination mixed with a spoonful of courage as we step out of our comfort zone.

How true! Familiarity breeds contempt, for sure. When visitors come to our city, Sydney, we take them to places we never both to go on our own. We just get so set in our daily routine that we don't 'stop to smell the roses', so to speak. It might have something to do with our age, because we used to take our kids to the beach and at Christmas we took them into the city to see the christmas lights and displays. Magical things happened when they went to see Santa Claus! They are wonderful memories, not only for us, but for the kids. It's important to have wonderful memories, so it's important to do special things when we and our family are young and able. Thanks, Marian, for triggering some of those memories.
