Today is the 40th anniversary of the first manned moon landing in Apollo 11. As Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon his now-famous words rang out around the world - ‘That’s one small step for man: one giant leap for mankind’. I must admit to sitting glued to the TV with my parents and brother and sisters, watching in awe as the whole wonderful drama unfolded. It seemed like a turning point for our identity as humans. Another frontier had been explored; another barrier had been overcome. It was nearing the end of the 60s and we all expected a bright new future to unfold before us.
Very few of us will fly to the moon and explore the far reaches of outer space. But we can all go on a far more amazing journey to explore and discover the wonders of our inner self. It takes as much courage to be your Authentic Self as it does to don a space suit and launch into the unknown. As someone once said to me, it is far easier to pretend to be someone else than to be who you really are.
But the rewards of knowing and accepting who you are, are priceless: - understanding your values and how to integrate them into your life; knowing your strengths and using them to best advantage to achieve your goals; living confidently with a sense of purpose…
Do you know who you are and who you want to be? Are you making choices that fit with being that person? I love that the historic event we remember today took place in the Sea of Tranquillity. Nearby is the Sea of Serenity. Is your own search for an Authentic Self leading you into your own sea of tranquillity and serenity?
